Top 15 Black Card Draw Cards in MTG! (2023)

When you think black in MTG, you might think removal spells, demons, and vampires. But one thing Black is incredibly good at is drawing cards, often at the cost of lives. It is part of the whole Negro philosophy: to sacrifice some life for some additional benefit. So while some of the best black move cards I'll mention in a moment are extremely powerful, they're also difficult to play well.

Newer players are often hesitant to deplete their life total, especially from their own cards. But with experience, players learn to use those precious hit points to win. I think the complexity of Magic makes it interesting and it's a fun list!

15. Yawgmoth's Accord

Top 15 Black Card Draw Cards in MTG! (2)

Yawgmoth's Bargain skips the purchase step, which is a major drawback. In turn, you can draw as many cards as you like in a single turn, as long as you have enough life points to pay. At a rate of just 1 life for every card you draw, this powerful enchantment can quickly fill your hand, and you can do this multiple times per game.

14. The Midnight Reaper

Top 15 Black Card Draw Cards in MTG! (3)

Midnight Reaper works best when your deck has a lot of creatures, especially nontoken creatures. In a typical Magic game, you're bound to lose a lot of creatures. So reloading your hand every time is a great way to make sure you always have useful cards to play with.

13. Grimmiger Haruspex

Top 15 Black Card Draw Cards in MTG! (4)

Grim Haruspex is simply a better version of Midnight Reaper because you don't lose health every time its ability activates. You also have the option to transform it, in case you want to surprise your opponents at the last second.

12. Yawgmoth, medico Thran

Top 15 Black Card Draw Cards in MTG! (5)

It seems that Yawgmoth is quite powerful on its own, but there's actually a popular infinite combo of it and a few other cards that make it even more powerful than it first appears.

Top 15 Black Card Draw Cards in MTG! (6)
Top 15 Black Card Draw Cards in MTG! (7)

When Yawgmoth, Thran Physician interacts with any creature with immortality, such as B. Young Wolf, you may sacrifice the same immortal creature repeatedly. This works because of a special rule where +1/+1 counters and -1/-1 counters cancel each other out. This means you can draw as many cards as you like, but you lose a life each time. To compensate for this disadvantage, you can bring in a Blood Artist, which will ensure your opponents lose a life every time!

11. Deadly Argument

Top 15 Black Card Draw Cards in MTG! (8)

So far, we've seen black cards that require you to sacrifice a life. Deadly Strife requires you to sacrifice an artifact or creature, which is possibly a higher price. However, you do receive a treasure token, which you can use as a sacrifice for a second mortal skirmish.

Obviously, you don't want to sacrifice your best artifact or creature for Deadly Strife, but if you sacrifice something small, it's usually worth it.

10. Dorfriten

Top 15 Black Card Draw Cards in MTG! (9)

Village Rites is, in some ways, a worse version of Deadly Dispute. You can only sacrifice a creature, not an artifact, and it doesn't create a treasure token. That said, I think it's slightly better than Deadly Dispute because it costs one mana instead of two, which can make all the difference in a game.

9. Untoter Augur

Top 15 Black Card Draw Cards in MTG! (10)

You only want to put Undead Augur in your deck if it's a Zombie deck. If you can work through a whole zombie army, don't worry if any of them fall in battle, because Undead Augur will replenish your hand so you can play another zombie army!

8. Locthwain Palace

Top 15 Black Card Draw Cards in MTG! (11)

What makes Castle Locthwain so great is that it's a country map, so you don't have to worry about it clogging up your hand when you have more pressing business to attend to in a game. Once you have enough mana and have nothing to do with it, you can put those extra resources to good use and get closer to drawing the card you need.

7. Register blood

Top 15 Black Card Draw Cards in MTG! (12)

Sign in Blood is one of the easiest cards on this list, but that doesn't make it any less good. Sometimes simplicity is best.

You pay two black mana, pay two life, and may draw two cards. That is all!

6. Night whispers

Top 15 Black Card Draw Cards in MTG! (13)

You can see that Night's Whisper is almost the same card as Sign of Blood, with only minor differences. Truth be told, in most scenarios, the two serve an identical purpose, so let's see how one might differ from the other.

First, Night's Whisper has a more forgiving mana cost. Instead of paying two black mana, you may pay one black mana and one mana of any color. This means that Night's Whisper is best suited for a multicolor deck where you want to use colors other than black.

However, Sign in Blood gives you the ability to target a player other than yourself. So if a player has 2 life or less, you can use that to win the game. This situation doesn't happen all that often, so I appreciate Night Whisper's flexible mana cost versus Sign in Blood's ability to target other players.

5. Dark Familiar

Top 15 Black Card Draw Cards in MTG! (14)

In terms of life loss, Dark Confidant's cost can be quite high, especially if the average mana cost of your cards is high. Typically, this two-mana creature comes in decks where most cards don't cost that much mana and where the benefit of having an extra card each turn outweighs the cost of losing life.

4. Arena pirexiana

Top 15 Black Card Draw Cards in MTG! (15)

Phyrexian Arena is a simple enchantment that works well. For the meager cost of one life per turn, you can draw an extra card each turn. The longer a game lasts, the Phyrexian Arena gives you the edge over your opponents, giving you access to more options and more resources.

Again, don't worry about loss of life! Your card advantage helps you win the game before the Phyrexian Arena squeezes the last points out of your life total, or you can make up for that lost life by playing cards that gain life.

3. Griselbrand

Top 15 Black Card Draw Cards in MTG! (16)

Griselbrand is one of the most powerful creatures in Magic history, but its high mana cost limits the number of decks it can fit into. It's one of those cards that usually instantly wins the game if you can get it onto the battlefield, but getting there is the tricky part.

Top 15 Black Card Draw Cards in MTG! (17)
Top 15 Black Card Draw Cards in MTG! (18)

Many decks are built around the idea of getting around Griselbrand's mana cost and finding another way to get him into play. This is usually done with an Entomb + Reanimate combo, placing Griselbrand in your Graveyard and reviving him. After that, draw as many cards as possible and hopefully get a winning combination. And with his lifelink ability, Griselbrand will restore all the precious life you lost.

2. Necropower

Top 15 Black Card Draw Cards in MTG! (19)

Necropotence has its drawbacks, but for the most part it's an excellent enchantment to play. Even if you skip the draw step, you'll more than make up for it with the number of cards you can put in your hand. One life per card is a small price to pay, especially when your deck is full of life-gain effects that help you draw even more cards.

My main complaint is that Necropotence doesn't put cards into your hand right away; Instead, you must wait until the next final step before you can use it. However, considering how capable this card is on its own, I think it's more than fair priced.

1. Ad nausea

Top 15 Black Card Draw Cards in MTG! (20)

In the right deck, Ad Nausea can buy a good portion of your library, sometimes your entire library!

Top 15 Black Card Draw Cards in MTG! (21)

Top 15 Black Card Draw Cards in MTG! (23)

One strategy is to have copies of Angel's Grace and Phyrexian Unlife in your deck. In this way, Ad Nausea allows you to drag your entire library without losing it. After that you can play Thassa's Oracle to win the game. These decks usually have a few copies of Lotus Petal available in case you don't have enough mana to cast Oracle of Thassa from your hand.

Other decks just play Ad Nauseam as is, relying on the lower mana costs of the cards in their deck. Whatever the execution strategy, as long as your deck is ready for it, you usually win the game when you play that powerful instant black.

Before you leave…

As you can see, my top 15 black cards to draw cards in MTG will give you a lot of cards, sometimes more than blue ones, but they will cost more than just mana. Assessing how many lives you can pay for cards is difficult and takes time to learn and balance your decks.
